Hi, I'm Katy.
Hi there,
My name is Katy McCall and I'm an advertising student at Texas Tech University. I'm especially interested in how creative concepts come together to solve marketing problems. To me, nothing is more satisfying than finding that right line of copy and pairing it with smart design. I'm also a fan of spoken word poetry, quirky socks, and corgis. Pleased to meet you. |
Every year, a group of about 18 Texas Tech students are selected by interview to compete in the national student advertising competition. The competition is put on by the American Advertising Federation and features a corporate client. Past clients have included Glidden paints, Mary Kay, and most recently Snapple. The client provides a case study outlining the history of its product and current advertising situation. The case study reflects a real world situation to challenge students' critical thinking abilities and creativity. Students work all year researching the product and its competition, identifying potential problems and developing an integrated communications campaign for the client. Each student team then pitches its campaign to a panel of judges in April.

DECA is a multinational organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. For me, it was the highlight of my high school career. My junior and senior year, I competed in the advertising division which consisted of a 12 page paper, a lengthy marketing exam, and a 10 minute presentation in front of a judge. Talk about intimidating! It was all worth it though. The experience allowed me to compete at an international level, make networking connections, and grow as a leader.
